What is the first aid for choking on vomit?

The first thing that needs to be done is to immediately place the patient in a lateral position with the head to one side to avoid the patient continuing to choke on the vomit into the airway due to violent vomiting. The patient’s collar should then be quickly undone to remove the vomit from the oropharynx and nose, and if available (or appropriate tools) suctioning should be performed at the same time. If the patient is unconscious, mouth-to-mouth respiration should also be performed. If this is done outside the hospital, the surrounding population should be called to call 120 immediately.
