Is monkeypox smallpox?

Monkeypox is not smallpox. Monkeypox virus is a poxvirus and belongs to the same genus as smallpox virus. It can be categorized into two strains, the Central African strain and the West African strain, with the Central African strain being more virulent and the West African strain being less virulent. The incubation period of monkeypox is 5 to 21 days, usually 6 to 13 days. Monkeypox can occur after human infection with monkeypox virus. After the onset of the disease, fever, malaise, headache, muscle pain, lymph node enlargement and other manifestations can occur. Skin lesions usually appear within 3 days after the onset of fever and present as a blistering rash that can progress to a pustular rash and eventually dry and crust. It is most common on the face, followed by the palms of the hands and feet, oral mucosa, and genitals. The number varies from a few to the entire body, and the duration of the disease is about 2 to 4 weeks. It is recommended to go to the hospital immediately when the above symptoms occur, and to exercise actively and eat healthy during the day.
