Buddha’s Hands has the effects of dispelling the liver and relieving depression (treating depression by unblocking the liver qi), regulating qi and harmonizing the middle (regulating the qi of the spleen and stomach so as to make the spleen and stomach function smoothly), and drying dampness and resolving phlegm (removing phlegm in the body with drying dampness medication). Contraindications are, caution should be exercised when there is heat in yin deficiency and no stagnation in qi deficiency. Foshan is mainly used in treating liver depression and qi stagnation (poor qi and blood transportation in the liver, emotional depression) and liver-stomach disharmony (disharmony between the ascending liver and descending stomach), which is characterized by distension and pain in the chest and ribs, plumpness in the epigastrium (abdomen) (stomach distension and discomfort), and stagnation of qi in the spleen and stomach, which is characterized by distension and pain in the epigastrium and abdomen, vomiting, poor appetite, coughing with excessive phlegm for long periods of time, and pain in the chest and breasts. The efficacy of a single Chinese medicine is limited, and clinically it needs to be combined with other Chinese medicines after identification by a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner.
