After a patella fracture whether surgical or not, the knee should be kept in a straight position for initial healing . Straight leg raising techniques on the other hand would be to wear a hinged brace or splint immediately after surgery if surgical, or to perform exercises such as straight leg raises and static quadriceps exercises if non-surgical in order to maintain a straight leg raise. 1. The most common complication after patella fracture is knee stiffness. Therefore, exercise plays an important role in returning to normal life. 2. Patella fractures can be treated without surgery (if the fracture is not displaced) or with surgery (for displaced fracture fragments). 3. After surgery, the lower limb needs to be kept straight to promote healing, so braces and casts are usually worn immediately after surgery to help immobilize the limb. 4. If surgery is not possible, the injured lower limb should be fully extended and placed in a knee brace for 4 weeks. During these 4 weeks, exercises such as straight leg raising, hip abduction and adduction are recommended to prevent muscle atrophy.
