What to do if you have hard cuticles on the side of your nails

Hard cuticles on the side of the nails need to identify the cause, which may be physiological or pathological; physiological causes need to adjust the lifestyle, and pathologic causes need to be targeted treatment under the guidance of a doctor, such as topical exfoliators, cryotherapy, and surgical treatment.
1. Physiological: excessive friction on the skin of the hands causes abnormal thickening of the stratum corneum; it is necessary to reduce the friction on the skin of the hands and use hand creams to maintain the skin if necessary, so that the symptoms can be gradually relieved.
2. Pathologic:
(1) tinea cruris, such as hyperkeratosis type manifested as dryness at the lesions, obvious thickening of keratin, rough and flaky surface, deepening of the texture, easy to crack in winter, and even bleeding, which may be accompanied by pain. Consider giving topical exfoliators, such as salicylic acid ointment, etc.; if necessary, take oral terbinafine hydrochloride tablets and other antifungal drugs.
(2) Periungual warts may occur at the edge of the nail, manifesting as localized roughness and irregular elevation of the skin, which may lead to nail pain and may even affect the normal growth of the nail. Topical medications include interferon and imiquimod, etc. Physical therapy (freezing and photodynamic) and surgical treatment are considered when necessary.
However, it can not be ruled out that it is caused by other factors. When the cuticle is obvious, if the adjustment of lifestyle is not obvious, it is necessary to go to the hospital in time to clarify the cause of the disease, follow the doctor’s instructions to standardize the treatment, and do not self-medication.
