A simple method of differentiating keloid scars from hyperplastic keloids

With the improvement of living standard, there are more and more people requesting for scar revision treatment, as there are many similarities in the clinical manifestations of keloid and hyperplastic scar, but there are still many differences in their etiology, progress, treatment plan and prognosis.

The causes of keloid scars are as follows: 1) Causes: keloid scars can be caused by skin injuries such as herpes, acne, mosquito bites, septic infections, or no obvious cause; whereas hyperplastic scars are generally caused by deep dermal skin injuries such as surgery, burns, scalds, and trauma.

2. Preferred sites: The anterior chest, back of the shoulder, and earlobe are the three sites where keloid scars are most likely to occur, while proliferative keloid scars usually occur at the site of surgery and trauma.

Family history: keloid scars often have a family history, while hyperplastic keloid scars do not have an obvious family history.

4, Clinical manifestations: keloid scars are not obvious in terms of pain and itching, but they grow beyond the limits of the original injury and infiltrate into the surrounding area, commonly known as “crab foot swelling”; whereas hyperplastic keloid scars are obvious in terms of itching and the lesions are limited to the original injury site and do not infiltrate into the surrounding area.

5, Treatment: The main methods of treatment are surgical excision, hormone injection, 5-FU injection, radiotherapy, etc. For keloid scars, single treatment has a very high recurrence rate, and two or three methods are often used to achieve good results, while the recurrence rate is low after applying the above methods to hyperplastic keloid scars.
