Indications This method is suitable for those who have a large scar area and are not suitable for radiotherapy or drug injection treatment. It is not effective for active keloids, but its application after scar excision can reduce the recurrence rate and the amount of radiotherapy or drug injections.
Compression therapy is started as soon as the wound heals; the pressure is kept within a tolerable level that does not affect the blood flow to the distal limb, usually 3.3-4.0 kPa (25-30 mm Hg); the pressure is applied daily, usually for 3-6 months, with a release time of <30 min per day; after 8-10 months, most patients can stop compression. The criteria for termination of compression are a flattening of the scar and a lightening and whitening of the color. Attention should be paid to the presence of blisters and trauma on the skin surface of the scar, and if there are skin lesions, compression should be applied after healing.
