How is post-herpetic neuralgia treated?

Under current medical conditions, more than 30% of patients with herpes zoster will suffer from post-herpetic neuralgia, which can last for months or years, making the disease a medical problem, commonly known as the “undead disease”. But it has been proven that this disease is curable, there is a law to follow? What are the factors that affect the efficacy of herpes zoster and post-herpetic neuralgia? The efficacy of treating this disease varies greatly from patient to patient, with the fastest being 7 to 10 days and the longest being 4 to 6 months, so what factors can affect the efficacy? (1) Age and constitution: the older and weaker the patient, the longer the course of treatment. (2) Mood: Patients who are prone to anger, impatience, and lack of confidence will have a longer course of treatment. (3) Sleep: Adequate sleep can improve immunity, and patients often have a long course of treatment because pain affects sleep, so they should take additional sleep aids. (4) Exertion: Serious patients should stop work and rest, and moderate to mild patients should also avoid overwork, otherwise it will affect the efficacy of treatment. (5) Other diseases: Patients with herpes, especially post-herpetic neuralgia, are often accompanied by chronic diseases such as diabetes, stomach disease and heart disease, which must be treated carefully at the same time in order to complement each other and improve the efficacy. (6) Medical condition: The course of treatment is prolonged for all patients with post-herpetic neuralgia for more than three months, and for patients with post-herpetic neuralgia for more than two years, it will take at least one and a half months to heal. (7) Time of consultation and treatment: the earlier the time of seeking medical treatment, the better the efficacy. (8) Climate and biological clock: When the climate changes strongly, the immunity of human body decreases and the pain increases, patients should not be nervous, otherwise, it will also affect the efficacy. There is also a relationship between the human biological clock and the efficacy, medically known as “virus recognition”, generally the human body at about four o’clock in the afternoon and three o’clock at night immunity is low, the virus will take advantage of the opportunity to make trouble, the effect of medication at this time is good. Why do patients with shingles have after-effects? What can be done? The main reason for post-herpetic neuralgia is that the thick fibers of the outer skin of the nerve line are destroyed by the herpes virus in large quantities, followed by the residual virus that is not regularly at work. Third, why some people are left with sequelae and some are not? This is related to the following factors. (a) Herpes type: Where large blister type and scarring (i.e., herpes vulgaris) of herpes zoster are prone to leave sequelae. These two types of herpes have a long crusting period, during which the virus is rampant and easily destroys the peripheral nerve fibers, resulting in post-herpetic neuralgia after the crusting. (ii) Age and physical condition: Patients who are over 60 years old and have multiple disease clusters and low immunity are prone to leave sequelae. (C) treatment methods and time: all with conventional methods, but not timely treatment is easy to leave sequelae, while patients treated with “Xie’s Herpes Spirit” in a timely manner will not leave sequelae. Fourth, then what to do after the emergence of sequelae? The following methods should be adopted: (a) Perineural acupuncture point injection for postherpetic neuralgia is very effective, the specific method can come to our hospital (the Third Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University, Department of Dermatology) for consultation and treatment. (2) Apply helium-neon laser local irradiation treatment. (c) Oral doxepin 25mg tid or carbamazepine 0.2 tid. (d) Thymopentin 1mg + vitamin B12 0.5mg intramuscular injection once a day. (v) Cimetidine 0.2 tid. (vi) Prednisone 15-30mg once daily (in case of no contraindication). The current view that “there is no special solution for this disease” is very wrong and harmful in the medical community! V. Why should I avoid applying heat to shingles? Many patients with shingles often use hot water on the bubble in order to get a momentary pain when they have not been treated, but this is actually a big no-no. The herpes zoster virus likes to eat nerves. The hot compress will make the surrounding microvessels bleed, which is conducive to the survival of the virus reproduction. This is an important reason why many patients do not heal for a long time often hot compresses. The principles of Chinese medicine in the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia are: first, stop bleeding and cool the blood. Second, clear heat and detoxify. Third, stop itching and pain. Fourth, repair the nerves. Topical application of Chinese medicine, the drug can be fully absorbed transdermally, which can make the drug reach the lesion directly, which can significantly shorten the virus discharge time and make the damaged skin heal quickly.
