Shingles is an infection by the varicella-zoster virus that causes a common skin condition. Herpes zoster, in women and men, does not differ in any particular way in terms of treatment. For shingles, antiviral drugs such as acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir are clinically selected and are more commonly used and effective. In the antiviral treatment of herpes zoster, emphasis is placed on early application and a full dose and course of application. Patients are advised to start treatment before the onset of herpes or within 48 hours of the onset of herpes. Herpes zoster is accompanied by severe neuralgia, so patients are advised to take oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to relieve the pain. Patients can also apply topical antiviral creams, such as acyclovir ointment and penciclovir cream, which are commonly used.
