How long does abdominal pain usually last after an IUD?

Generally there will be mild abdominal pain after IUD placement, usually no more than seven days. This abdominal pain should be vague, i.e., a slight cramping in the lower abdomen and a slight soreness in the lumbosacral region. Because the IUD is a foreign body to the uterus, the uterus may contract for a period of time after the IUD is placed in order to eliminate the foreign body, which may cause mild vague pain in the lower abdomen. However, if there is significant abdominal pain after IUD placement, it cannot be ruled out that the body is allergic to the IUD or that there is inflammation of the uterine cavity after IUD placement, which requires prompt access to a gynecological clinic for symptomatic examination and treatment. In addition, it should be noted that short-term vaginal bleeding and mild abdominal pain after IUD insertion are normal and do not require excessive treatment.
