Sometimes high and sometimes low blood pressure is not necessarily hypertension, but may also be physiologic fluctuations in blood pressure. Normal human blood can also fluctuate throughout the day and may be high or low at times. Generally speaking, blood pressure rises gradually in the early morning after getting up and moving around, with the first peak occurring around 8 to 10 am. The blood pressure then gradually decreases and stays at a relatively low level, with a corresponding second peak around 3-5 pm. Despite the two peaks, the peak blood pressure is often <140 mmHg systolic and <90 mmHg diastolic, a condition that is not considered hypertension. Hypertension is defined as a blood pressure with a systolic blood pressure of ≥140 mmHg and a diastolic blood pressure of ≥90 mmHg when measured three times at rest on non-simultaneous days, and is therefore recommended to be treated by a physician when necessary.
