How long can the elderly live with bedsores

The survival time of elderly people with decubitus ulcers is affected by a variety of factors, depending on the size of the ulcer, its severity, treatment measures, care, as well as the individual’s physical condition and underlying diseases, and cannot be generalized. Decubitus ulcers, also known as pressure sores, are caused by long-term pressure on local tissues, resulting in continuous ischemia, hypoxia, and malnutrition, resulting in tissue ulceration and necrosis, and are commonly seen in patients who are bedridden for long periods of time. If the area of bedsores is small, it is recommended that timely local debridement treatment, regular turning, enhanced care, and adequate nutritional support should be provided, and in general, symptoms can gradually improve until they heal without affecting normal life expectancy. If the bed sores are large, the trauma is deep, and the condition is serious, surgery is required to remove necrotic tissue, and the treatment time is longer, which may affect life if accompanied by related underlying diseases or secondary infections, etc. Therefore, for elderly people who are bedridden for a long time, an air mattress is recommended and they should be turned regularly, once an hour is recommended, to avoid long-term pressure in one position. Once bedsores are detected, active treatment and effective care should be provided to avoid infections.
