Bitter mouth and diarrhea may be caused by the syndrome of food stagnation in the stomach and intestines, or the syndrome of liver qi multiplying the spleen, and is usually treated with traditional Chinese medicine. 1. Food stagnation syndrome: Bitter mouth and diarrhea may be caused by uncontrolled diet and internal stagnation of food, thus blocking the intestines and stomach, resulting in malfunctioning of the spleen and stomach’s function of transporting and digesting food. In this case, it is usually necessary to eliminate food stagnation (promote food digestion). It can be treated with Chinese medicines such as Baohe Pills, Jiawei Baohe Pills, Hovenia Conducting Stagnation Pills, and Hezhong Li Spleen Pills under the guidance of a doctor. It should be noted that Jia Wei Bao He Wan should not be used for patients with damp-heat obstruction (stagnation caused by the accumulation of damp and heat evils), and Jia Wei Bao He Wan should not be used at the same time as Bao He Wan to avoid duplication of medication. 2. Liver qi multiplying the spleen syndrome: when the patient is emotionally stressed, the qi is unfavorable and the liver loses its detachment (the liver’s function of detachment is abnormal), so symptoms such as bitter taste in the mouth and diarrhea may occur. This condition can be treated by taking pain and diarrhea granules and stomach-supporting granules under the guidance of a doctor. However, mild nausea may occur during the administration of Painful Diarrhea Ning Granules. Stomach nourishing granules are not recommended for patients with stomach yin deficiency (insufficient yin fluid in the stomach) or stomach pain. In addition, during the period of taking Chinese medicine treatment, patients need to maintain a light diet, mainly easy to digest food, avoid eating cold and unclean or difficult to digest food.
