Blue light for infants is currently the most effective treatment for neonatal jaundice with the fewest side effects, so parents can use it with complete confidence when their baby has jaundice and needs to be exposed to blue light. It is sufficient to shield the eyes and genitals when the blue light is administered. Common side effects include rash, mild diarrhea, fever and bronze skin color, which will disappear soon after the blue light is stopped. Hydration, such as adequate breastfeeding or fluids if necessary, is important during blue light exposure, but no other special treatment is usually necessary.
