Coughing is the process by which the body removes foreign bodies from the respiratory tract and is a protective respiratory reflex of the body. If the cough is infectious, anti-inflammatory treatment should be used along with cough suppressants. If children have a cough with more mucosal secretions in the airways, they should also take some phlegm-reducing medications as appropriate. In case of allergic cough, anti-allergic treatment can be administered. Along with medication, it is important to eat a light diet, avoid a diet high in sugar, salt and protein, and eat more green vegetables and fruits to facilitate recovery. For children with mild cough, dietary therapy combined with Chinese herbal medicine can help relieve the cough more quickly. Food therapy can be used to clear heat and phlegm by boiling congee with Chuan Bai Mu, to moisten the lungs and relieve cough by boiling water with snow pear and lily and rock sugar, to reduce phlegm and lower gas by boiling water with white radish, and to strengthen the spleen and relieve cough by boiling congee with yam and mandarin. Chinese herbal medicines can be taken, such as tangerine shell combined, orange red phlegm cough granules, and oral liquid for children to clear lung and resolve phlegm. If a child’s cough does not subside or even worsens, or is accompanied by high fever, headache, loss of appetite and poor mental health, he or she should go to a regular hospital for routine blood and chest X-ray tests to clarify the diagnosis and undergo systematic treatment.
