The average erythrocyte hemoglobin volume, which is the average amount of hemoglobin contained in each red blood cell in the peripheral blood. The normal range is 27-34 PG. Below 27 PG is a decrease in the average erythrocyte hemoglobin volume, and above 34 PG is an increase in the average erythrocyte hemoglobin volume. The average hemoglobin level can be measured clinically to make a general determination of the type of anemia. For example, a decreased erythrocyte mean hemoglobin volume is most commonly associated with microcytic hypochromic anemia, which is commonly associated with iron deficiency anemia or thalassemia, and serves as a guide for the diagnosis of anemia. If the average erythrocyte hemoglobin is increased, the most common disorder is megaloblastic anemia, which is common in patients with folic acid and vitamin B12 deficiency, and also serves as a guide for the diagnosis of the patient.
