How to reduce the postoperative recurrence rate of gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors?

Targeted therapy can reduce the recurrence rate of patients after surgery. The main treatment modalities for gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumors are surgical treatment and targeted therapy. The earliest targeted drugs were used to treat patients with advanced disease, and as research has found that targeted drugs can reduce the rate of post-surgical recurrence in patients. Based on the assessment of the risk of gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumor and genotyping, doctors decide whether patients need postoperative adjuvant therapy and the length of treatment. How much will the patient’s recurrence and metastasis rate decrease after applying targeted drugs? The amount of reduction is related to the risk level of the tumor. For high-risk patients, there are large studies abroad on the drug-taking group versus the non-drug-taking group. In the study, the recurrence rate at 5 years after surgery was 35% (65% recurrence-free survival rate) in the 3-year drug-taking group and 50% (48% recurrence-free survival rate) in the 1-year drug-taking group.
