What causes a jagged tongue?

Jagged tongue is mainly considered to be related to tongue hypertrophy, congenital deformity and radiotherapy.

1. Hypertrophy of tongue body: when the tongue body is hypertrophied due to inflammation, trauma, tumor, mental factors or some systemic diseases, the tongue body will enter between the upper and lower teeth, which will lead to jagged tongue through long-term friction with the teeth.

2. Congenital deformity: patients are born with tongue deformity, and the jagged edge can be seen on the tongue, but this deformity doesn’t affect the pronunciation and chewing function.

3. Received radiotherapy: If the patient has received facial radiotherapy for the tumor, atrophy of the tongue papillae and jagged tongue may also occur.

It is recommended that patients should consult doctor in time for jagged tongue, avoid eating spicy and stimulating food, and keep clean and hygienic oral cavity.
