Enterovirus 71 can cause HFMD, but it is not the only causative agent, and infection with this virus does not necessarily result in HFMD.
Enterovirus 71 is a microRNA virus, and the pathogen is mainly transmitted by fecal-oral transmission, respiratory transmission, or infection through close contact. Enterovirus 71 infections often cause meningitis, encephalitis, herpes pharyngitis, and hand, foot and mouth disease in children, but in adults, most infections are asymptomatic or present with mild flu-like symptoms. Therefore, HFMD does not necessarily follow from infection with this virus.
HFMD can also be caused by other viruses such as Coxsackie A16.
Currently, HFMD can be prevented by vaccinating against enterovirus EV71, practicing good personal hygiene, and avoiding contact with children who are already sick.
It is recommended to seek medical attention if necessary.
