Somatostatin, also known as simethicone, is a glucagon-like peptide-1 analog that is primarily used to control blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Somatostatin is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analog that lowers blood glucose through a mechanism that stimulates insulin secretion and decreases glucagon secretion. It can lower blood glucose levels by secreting insulin when blood glucose levels are high and increase glucagon secretion when there is a possible risk of hypoglycemia, thus avoiding hypoglycemia. Somatostatin not only controls blood glucose levels, but also reduces appetite, which leads to weight loss, facilitates the reduction of blood pressure, blood glucose, and lipid levels, and improves the state of metabolic disorders in the body, resulting in better cardiovascular benefits. The most common adverse reactions to the clinical use of such drugs are gastrointestinal adverse reactions, which may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea and so on. It should not be used in patients who are allergic to the components of this class of drugs, medullary thyroid cancer, pancreatitis. Somalutide should be used under medical supervision.
