Role of tortoiseshell

Tortoiseshell is the name of a kind of traditional Chinese medicine, which is the dorsal armor of tortoiseshell, a turtle of the family Tortoiseshellidae. It has the efficacy of calming the liver and calming alarm, clearing heat and removing toxins, and is the main treatment for fever and high temperature, dizziness, delirium, convulsions, pediatric eclampsia, vertigo, distraction and insomnia, carbuncle, swelling, sores and poison, and other illnesses. Tortoiseshell is sweet, salty and cold in nature, and belongs to the heart and liver meridians, with the dorsal armor as the part of medicine. The method of taking and concocting is generally to take the original herb, brush it clean, soak it in warm water to soften it, cut it into fine julienne strips, dry it or grind it into fine powder. Roasted tortoiseshell is made by putting talcum powder in a pot, frying it over moderate heat, adding cleaned tortoiseshell silk, mixing and frying it until the surface is slightly yellow and bulging, then removing it, sieving off the talcum powder, letting it cool, and then grinding it into powder to be used as medicine.
