Causes and treatment of dry cough at night

Coughing at night is more likely to be considered cough variant asthma or esophageal reflux. Cough variant asthma usually has a history of eczema or a family history of allergies. The cough is preceded by a tickly throat and requires the use of leukotriene receptor blockers as well as nebulized bronchodilators combined with inhaled hormones. Most cases of esophageal reflux are usually characterized by heartburn and acid reflux, and the diagnosis can be confirmed by a 24-hour pH test of the esophagus or gastroscopy. Gastrointestinal stimulants and proton pump inhibitors, such as domperidone combined with omeprazole, are needed.
