Epilepsy is a chronic disease in which sudden abnormal discharges of neurons in the brain lead to transient brain dysfunction. It is a disease characterized by high disability rate, long duration and recurrent clinical episodes, which seriously threatens the physical and mental health of patients. In 2011, the World Health Organization reported that there are about 50 million people with epilepsy worldwide, of which 40 million are in developing countries. There are approximately 9.8 million people with epilepsy and 6.8 million with active epilepsy in China, and there are still seizures every year and close to 400,000 new cases each year. Most worrisome is that 2/3 of the epilepsy patients in our country are adolescents and children under the age of 18. It is close to 4-4.5 million. The prevalence of active epilepsy is 4.6 per 100,000, with an annual incidence of 300,000/100,000. Moreover, the mortality rate of epilepsy patients is high, 2-3 times higher than normal. 70-80% of patients do not receive regular and effective diagnosis and treatment. There are several possible reasons for this: 1. Many parts of China are economically and culturally underdeveloped, and the rural population is still the majority, lacking sufficient education and knowledge about epilepsy; 2. “More importantly, there are insufficient medical resources nationwide, and the level of epilepsy physicians, epilepsy surgeons, and neurophysiologists varies from place to place. The progress of medical development varies from place to place, and there is a serious imbalance in medical resources. These make the majority of children with epilepsy not receive effective treatment, and it is mostly estimated that only about 900-1 million children have received systematic and standardized diagnosis and treatment. Foreign and domestic multicenter studies have shown that reasonable and standardized antiepileptic drug treatment can control epilepsy in 70%-80% of children with epilepsy, and about 2/3 of children with epilepsy can have their seizures completely controlled after 2-5 years of treatment, and gradually reduce and discontinue their medication and remain seizure-free. However, many parents of children are partial to prescriptions, lack scientific understanding of western medicine, exaggerate the adverse effects of western medicine; arbitrarily reduce and stop medication, resulting in more and more frequent seizures, because the brain is deprived of oxygen after the seizure, which seriously damages the higher brain functions, resulting in abnormalities in intelligence, emotion and motor ability. Many patients live in the shadow of social isolation, do not get the fun of childhood, and even have to stay away from school. Epilepsy is seriously affecting the healthy growth of the majority of patients, so the prevention and treatment of epilepsy in children is the top priority of epilepsy prevention and treatment in China. Childhood epilepsy onset fever causative factors are largely related to a series of abnormalities in the perinatal period of the pregnant mother: insufficient gestational weeks (premature birth), eclampsia, intrauterine distress, can lead to congenital developmental abnormalities in infants, newborns, infants and children, increasing the risk of seizures; abdominal injuries to pregnant women, ultraviolet radiation, renovation of houses, gas, carbon monoxide poisoning, taking drugs harmful to the fetus and various microorganisms such as rubella Injuries to the abdomen, ultraviolet radiation, renovation of the house, gas and carbon monoxide poisoning, drugs harmful to the fetus and various microorganisms such as rubella, measles and toxoplasmosis; intrauterine infections caused by birth injuries, improper use of forceps and fetal head attraction; traumatic brain injury and intracranial tumors after birth can all lead to seizures. Therefore, it is important to strengthen the protection of pregnant women and to enhance the general medical knowledge of pregnant women. Let’s take action and work hard for the health and growth of children with epilepsy, increase the care for children, let them be recognized by the society and receive good education.
