How to deal with the aftermath of polio

The management of the sequelae of polio is mainly based on rehabilitation training, physical therapy and surgical treatment. Polio, also known as poliomyelitis, is an acute infectious disease caused by poliovirus. Sequelae of poliomyelitis are due to necrosis and disappearance of motor neurons, permanent loss of function of the corresponding muscles, which can lead to muscle atrophy of limbs, deformities of the trunk or limbs, curvature of the spinal column, clubfoot or ectropion, and so on. For children who can still move their limbs, rehabilitation training can be carried out under the guidance of physicians to promote the recovery of limb muscles and prevent deformities. For severely paralyzed limbs that cannot move, massage can be performed first to promote blood circulation in the affected limbs and enhance muscle strength. Physical therapy such as electrotherapy, hydrotherapy and phototherapy can also be used to promote muscle relaxation and improve local blood circulation. Serious deformity can also be surgical treatment. Poliomyelitis sequelae may be recovered in the later stage after active treatment, so we should insist on training.
