For women who are sexually active, the ultrasound probe is usually inserted through the vagina, or through the anus if the patient is not yet sexually active. The physician will put a disposable condom and lubricant on the vaginal ultrasound probe, wear disposable examination gloves, and insert the probe into the vagina or rectum.
