What to do if your three year old stutters

Three-year-old babies who stutter can try to be corrected through psychotherapy, systematic desensitization therapy, slowing down of speech therapy, speech correction therapy and so on. 1. Psychological treatment: Parents should let their children believe that stuttering can be corrected, build up confidence in overcoming stuttering, be patient with their children, not to show disappointment because of their children’s stuttering, and at the same time, encourage their children to speak and communicate with others more often, so as to eliminate the fear or anxiety of stuttering and other mentality. 2. Systematic desensitization therapy: This refers to inducing the child to slowly expose and accept the negative factors that cause stuttering. For example, if the child is prone to stuttering when he/she is anxious or fearful, the child can be put in a tolerable state of anxiety or fear and be taught how to overcome this state of mind, and then gradually increase the negative factors so as to increase the child’s tolerance to them. 3. Slow speech therapy: Speech function can be regulated by slowing down the speed of speech, for example, by first demonstrating an example of slow speech to the child and letting the child read along by imitating it, so that the child can pronounce the words normally, and then gradually increase the speed of speech after the symptoms of stuttering have subsided. 4. Corrective speech therapy: Correcting the child’s incorrect pronunciation skills, making sure the child knows how to maintain the coordination of the organs in the mouth when pronouncing words, and the coordination of breathing when vocalizing, etc., and patiently correcting words and phrases with pauses or repetitions, so as to gradually increase the degree of fluency in speech.
