Is mild asphyxia common in newborns?

Mild neonatal asphyxia is not considered common and may be related to the fact that the newborn has not developed well in the mother’s body, or that there were abnormalities during delivery. The exact cause often needs to be determined by further examination. The baby will need to be kept in an incubator for a period of time after birth and will only be removed from the incubator when the baby’s condition improves.
