You should not drink water 4 to 6 hours before the hysterectomy operation, so that the patient will not vomit during the operation, and aspiration pneumonia or even asphyxiation will occur.
Hysterectomy is a relatively large operation, patients should have a liquid or semi-liquid diet one day before the operation, and fasting and abstaining from drinking before the operation. Because food and other substances take a long time to digest, while water and other liquid substances are digested and absorbed more quickly, it is generally necessary to abstain from eating for 8 to 12 hours before the operation, and abstaining from drinking for only 4 to 6 hours.
If the patient does not follow the doctor’s instructions to fast, there is a possibility of vomiting after the surgical anesthesia, and the food and water will be easily inhaled into the trachea after being spit out through the opening of the esophagus, which will cause aspiration pneumonia, and in severe cases, suffocation can also occur during the operation.
If a hysterectomy is needed, please follow the doctor’s instructions for preoperative preparation.
