Retroverted tongue usually does not heal on its own.
1. Tongue falling back is usually caused by neurological factors and pathological fractures. For example, lack of oxygen in the brain causes the muscles that innervate the tongue to relax, causing the tongue to fall back. If the mandible is fractured, the muscles around the mandible will be displaced and the tongue will move with the mandible, resulting in tongue thrust. Once tongue thrust occurs, it is very difficult to heal on its own and requires intervention and treatment to improve.
2. Tongue thrust may cause hypoxia, leading to asphyxia, which is a serious life-threatening condition. If the symptoms of tongue thrust are mild, it can be left untreated, with observation and regular checkups in the hospital.
If the symptoms of tongue thrust are more serious, treatment must not be delayed. It is recommended to go to the hospital as soon as possible and cooperate with the doctor for surgical treatment, such as tracheotomy and mandibular traction.
