How do you know when you’re recovering from paraplegia?

To determine whether the function of paraplegic limbs is restored or not, one should check the sensation of the ends of the lower limbs, whether there is any sensation such as pain, warmth, itching and so on. Paraplegia is caused by transverse damage to the spinal cord, which is mainly manifested as loss of motor function of the lower limbs, accompanied by different degrees of sensory deficits, urinary and fecal incontinence and other symptoms. After a period of treatment, if the patient can feel the cold or hot temperature of the lower limbs and the touch of objects, it means that the sensory function is recovering; or the muscle strength of the lower limbs is recovering relatively, such as the toes can be moved and the tensing of the feet, etc.; as well as the incontinence of urine and feces function is gradually recovered, etc. If there is still no sensation, it is still a sign of paraplegia. If there is still no sensation, the patient has not yet recovered. It is recommended that the patient should go to the hospital for regular checkups to accurately understand the recovery of his/her condition. After paraplegic patient’s condition is stabilized, he/she should actively cooperate with doctor to carry out rehabilitation training, meanwhile pay attention to adjusting the mentality, and the diet should be rich in high-protein and high-vitamin food, such as fish, shrimp, eggs, and so on. Family members should help the patient turn over and pat the back regularly to keep the skin clean and dry. If the patient is found to have abnormal performance should be timely medical treatment, so as not to delay treatment.
