What to look for in an enema before a colonoscopy

Before the colonoscopy, oral medication is usually used to induce diarrhea to achieve the purpose of cleansing the intestines. If the patient needs to perform emergency colonoscopy due to intestinal obstruction, or if the bowel cannot be discharged during bowel preparation, or if the bowel cannot be pulled cleanly, an enema can be performed. The enema before colonoscopy needs to pay attention to the gentle movement, the enema temperature and observe the patient’s reaction. Enema is a certain solution injected from the anus to the colon, which can stimulate gastrointestinal peristalsis and remove feces. 1. Gentleness of movement: the movement must be gentle during intubation, and should follow the anatomical characteristics of the intestinal tract, and should not be too forceful to avoid damage to the anus. 2. Enema temperature: the temperature and concentration of the enema solution should be controlled, especially for typhoid patients, the solution usually does not exceed 500 ml, the pressure should be low, the enema should be cooled down, and the temperature should be measured again half an hour after defecation. 3. Observe the patient’s reaction: if the patient in the process of enema, the occurrence of uncomfortable reaction, such as panic, cold sweat, pale and other symptoms, should immediately stop the enema. It is recommended to prepare for enema under the guidance of a doctor to avoid adverse effects.
