Elderly people with high blood pressure of 180mmHg have a significant increase in blood pressure, and should promptly go to the cardiovascular medicine outpatient clinic for antihypertensive treatment such as medication and lifestyle modification. High pressure up to 180mmHg has reached the level of severe hypertension, indicating that the blood pressure increase is more serious, or the effect of blood pressure control is poor. At this point there is an urgent need for antihypertensive treatment, including medication, such as oral nifedipine, metoprolol and other drugs to lower blood pressure. Therapeutic lifestyle interventions, such as weight loss, reduction of sodium and fat intake, potassium supplementation, cessation of smoking and restriction of alcohol, increased exercise, and reduction of mental stress can also be performed. The prevalence of hypertension in the elderly increases with age and the onset of some underlying diseases, and systolic blood pressure in particular tends to increase. When the blood pressure increases or the level of hypertension is not well controlled, one should go to the hospital as soon as possible for further examination and start standardized treatment; thus, effective control of blood pressure and prevention of complications can be achieved. It is recommended to maintain a balanced mindset, relax, exercise regularly and monitor blood pressure on a daily basis. Specific medication should be prescribed by the doctor.
