How to treat macular eyes

First of all, we have to clarify what is “macula”, some people call the “yellow patch” that appears on the surface of the eye as “macula”, which is not the true meaning of macula, but can only be called This is not a true macula, but only a “yellow patch”. The real macula, located on the retina at the bottom of the eye, cannot be seen by patients with the naked eye and must be observed by special examination instruments. These two types of macula, with different locations and different nature, can cause very different damage to the eye. Therefore, the treatment methods are likewise very different. Yellow plaques that occur on the skin of the eyelids, called xanthomas, are associated with dyslipidemia and generally do not cause any uncomfortable symptoms. If the treatment is intended to address aesthetic concerns, the treatment depends on the size of the lesion: if it is smaller, it can be treated with laser ablation; if it is larger, it can be surgically removed. In the case of yellow patches that occur on the bulbar conjunctiva, commonly at the edge of the cornea (black eye), there are pigmented nevi, pigmented spots, and lid spots. Pigmented nevi or pigmented spots, usually caused by simple pigmentation, are mostly congenital and usually do not require special treatment. Depending on each individual case, only surgical treatment is an option, as laser treatment is not possible on the bulbar conjunctiva. The occurrence of lid macules is often caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun, mostly seen in people who live and work outdoors or in the highlands. The treatment of this macula is largely based on the patient’s symptoms and the size of the lesion. If there is a significant foreign body sensation, artificial tears are used. If congestion is evident, anti-inflammatory eye drops can be used for a short period of time. If it is larger, surgical treatment can be taken. For macular degeneration located in the fundus of the eye, the symptoms are mainly visual impairment, such as vision loss, visual distortion, etc. The damage to the eye is much greater than the “yellow plaque” on the surface of the eye. Macular degeneration is mainly treated with intraocular injections. For macular anterior membrane and macular fissure, surgical treatment is the main treatment. For macular edema, intraocular injection of drugs, laser treatment and photodynamic therapy are also available.
