Where is the appendix

The appendix is located in the right iliac fossa, which is the right lower abdomen, and has an earthworm shape with a length ranging from 2-20 cm, usually 6-8 cm, and a diameter of 0.5-0.7 cm. The appendix starts at the end of the cecum and is attached to the confluence of the three colonic bands. Tracing along the three colonic bands toward the end of the cecum is a common method of finding the root of the appendix during surgery. The body projection of the appendix is approximately at the junction of the umbilicus and the outer 1/3 of the right anterior superior iliac spine line, which is called the McSweeney’s point, and the McSweeney’s point is the marker point for selecting the appendectomy incision. The majority of appendices are intraperitoneal organs and their location is variable. Since the relationship between the appendix root and the cecum is constant, the location of the appendix varies with the position of the cecum. It is usually in the right lower abdomen, but can also be as high as below the liver, as low as in the pelvis, or even across the midline to the left.
