What are the symptoms of degenerative discs and joints and how should they be treated?

Degeneration of the intervertebral discs and small joints (articulations) of the spine is a normal part of aging. SYMPTOMS AND DIAGNOSIS: Although evident on x-rays, degeneration may not cause any symptoms. Some people, however, may have severe back and/or leg pain. In patients with advanced arthritis/degeneration, x-rays, on the other hand, will show significant disc stenosis as well as arthritic changes in the joints. TREATMENT: Initial treatment is typically focused on improving back muscle support through activity, anti-inflammatory medication, and bracing. If the initial pain is severe, bed rest may be necessary for a short period of time to control acute pain, with a gradual return to activity as soon as possible. Severe, progressive symptoms accompanied by degenerative changes may require surgical treatment for pain relief.
