Oxidase is also known as cytochrome oxidase, and the oxidase test is indicated to detect the presence of oxidase in bacteria. Bacteria that are positive for oxidase include Pseudomonas spp., Aeromonas spp. and Neisseria spp. while Enterobacteriaceae are negative. Therefore, the oxidase test can be used to identify these bacteria. The genus Neisseria contains nine species of Neisseria, commonly Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, so the oxidase test does not indicate Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection, but also needs to refer to clinical symptoms and other test results.
