What are the symptoms of an unclosed foramen ovale?

Most cases of patent foramen ovale are asymptomatic; some can present with headaches, dizziness, difficulty breathing, and limb weakness. The foramen ovale is a physiologic passageway of the heart septum during embryonic life and usually fuses gradually after birth; if it does not fuse by the age of one year, it is called patent foramen ovale. Most cases of patent foramen ovale do not cause shunting of blood in the heart chambers or have less shunting and are asymptomatic. If the pressure in the right atrium exceeds that in the left atrium due to certain factors, foramen ovale insufficiency may cause abnormal shunting of blood in the heart chambers, which may result in headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath, and weakness of the limbs. It is important to avoid strenuous activities, maintain a good routine, keep a good attitude, have regular checkups, and seek medical attention if any discomfort occurs.
