Generally speaking, after total resection of thyroid cancer, if the patient’s incision heals well without infection and other complications, the wound can recover in about 1-2 weeks. Most of the thyroid cancers are papillary or follicular cancers. Surgery is performed by total resection of the thyroid gland on the affected side plus isthmus resection, subtotal resection of the opposite side or total resection of the thyroid gland, etc. Sometimes, it is necessary to clear the surrounding lymphatic tissues, and the surgical injury is bigger. Due to the open surgery, a drain is usually placed in the neck after the operation, and depending on the amount of drainage fluid, the drain is usually removed 3-5 days after the operation. For patients with complications or older patients, or those who have their drains removed later, the recovery time will be appropriately prolonged. However, the skin and tissues in the thyroid surgery area are rich in blood circulation, and the skin is thinner and heals faster. Generally, the skin is basically healed 7 days after surgery, and the skin and subcutaneous tissues are basically recovered within 2 weeks after surgery.
