How many eggs make an IVF baby?

Unlike natural cycles where only one egg is usually released each month, assisted reproduction treatments require multiple eggs to be obtained through controlled ovulation induction. It’s like running a marathon, not all participants make it to the finish line, and going through a cycle of ovulation induction treatment, not all eggs retrieved can undergo normal fertilization, egg cleavage, and subsequent development into a transferable embryo. Therefore, we need to obtain a certain number of eggs! Every IVF patient wants to get as many eggs as possible in one cycle, and patients who undergo egg retrieval on the same day often compare the number of eggs they receive with each other, but is more eggs the better? What is the right number? Early clinical studies have shown that when the number of eggs retrieved is between 6 and 15, the live birth rate increases with the number of eggs retrieved per fresh embryo transfer cycle, and that the highest live birth rate is achieved when the number of eggs retrieved is around 15, but if the number of eggs retrieved exceeds 20, the live birth rate decreases instead of increasing with the number of eggs retrieved, and the patient’s risk of developing ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome increases significantly. Recent clinical studies have shown that the cumulative live birth rate (dark blue bar graph) increases steadily with the number of eggs received, reaching 70% at ≥25 eggs, but begins to increase slowly above 27 eggs. However, in the fresh embryo transfer cycle (light blue bar graph), the highest live birth rate was achieved when the number of eggs received reached 7, and remained relatively unchanged (increase or decrease ≤5%) between 7 and 20. Above 20 eggs, the live birth rate decreased rather than increased in fresh cycles. Thus, it is clear that more eggs are not better. In addition, the number of eggs obtained is affected by the patient’s own age, ovarian reserve, choice of ovulation regimen and ovarian responsiveness. Each person’s situation is different, so patients should not blindly compare with each other, which will cause unnecessary troubles. It is recommended to follow the professional doctor’s guidance and choose the suitable treatment plan for your own conditions, so as to obtain a satisfactory pregnancy outcome as soon as possible!
