Topical medications for hemangiomas

Topical medications for hemangiomas, generally applicable to superficial infantile hemangiomas, are divided into two main categories. One type is beta-blockers such as propranolol ointment, timolol cream, etc., usually applied topically to the surface of the tumor, continuous use of drugs need to be 3-6 months or until the color of the tumor completely faded, usually the most obvious efficacy of the first 2-3 months of the medication, the main adverse effects of contact dermatitis redness or flaking. Another type of medication is imiquimod 5%, which is also applied topically over a course of about 16 weeks. Common skin reactions include erythema, vesicles, ulcers, and scabs, and the medication needs to be discontinued promptly in the event of an adverse reaction, and the medication should be continued only after the skin has fully recovered. Sometimes this medication can cause a strong immune response in the skin, leading to scarring later in life, so caution is advised, including in infants with contraindications to topical beta-blockers.
