Atherosclerotic lesions of the lower extremities are associated with hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, obesity, old age, smoking and other factors, and the patient’s arterial blood vessel wall forms a substance that looks like rice porridge, which is medically called atheromatous plaque, so atherosclerosis is also called atherosclerosis. The familiar coronary heart disease is short for coronary atherosclerotic heart disease, which is caused by the narrowing or occlusion of blood vessels called coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart due to atherosclerosis, thus leading to insufficient blood supply to the heart muscle. Atherosclerotic lesions are generally systemic disorders, and lesions in the arteries of the legs caused by atherosclerosis are called lower extremity atherosclerotic occlusive disease, which is divided into three stages according to the development and severity of the disease. The early stage of the disease is called intermittent claudication, which is manifested as in the case of Lao Zhao, after walking for a while, due to narrowing or occlusion of the arteries in the legs, causing insufficient blood supply to the lower limbs, mostly weakness of the lower legs, muscle pain, soreness and swelling, after rest, the blood supply is restored, and after continuing to walk, the same situation will occur, medically known as ischemic intermittent claudication. At this stage, patients often do not pay enough attention to it, and inexperienced doctors also do not recognize it enough, and treatment is often delayed because it is considered as old age, cerebral infarction, back and leg pain, calcium deficiency, etc. The disease continues to develop to the second stage, that is, the resting pain stage, the patient can be manifested as a heavy cold, numbness of the lower limbs, while even when not walking toes also have pain, especially at night, called resting pain, the patient has difficulty sleeping, seriously affecting physical and mental health. If the feet are washed with hot water or warmed with a hot water bag, the local metabolism of the feet will be accelerated, aggravating ischemia and causing damage that is not easily cured. The third stage is the gangrene stage due to severe ischemia of the lower limbs leading to calf ulcers or blackened necrosis of the toes, and this stage faces amputation. Lower extremity atherosclerosis occlusive disease is more common in middle-aged and elderly people aged 50-70 years old, and diabetic patients are more likely to develop atherosclerosis at an early stage. We would like to remind middle-aged and elderly people to give up bad habits, eat reasonably, exercise properly, and actively treat hypertension, hyperlipidemia and diabetes. If intermittent claudication of the lower limbs, cold and numb lower limbs, or broken limbs do not heal for a long time, you should go to the vascular surgery department to get timely and correct guidance and treatment from a specialist.
