If a patient suffers from a sprain of the ankle joint that causes damage to the ligamentous joint capsule, the patient must limit the flexion and extension activities and weight-bearing activities of the ankle joint if the pain is obvious, so as to avoid stressing the strained ligament and joint capsule, which will cause swelling and pain to increase. Cold compresses should be applied within 24 hours of the sprain to relieve the pain and to prevent the swelling from increasing. Elevate the affected limb during bed rest to facilitate venous reflux, swelling and pain relief. If the pain is obvious, you can take oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to relieve the pain, and after 24 hours, you can apply blood-stasis ointment to the ankle joint, and after 48 hours, you can apply heat to the ankle joint to promote the recovery of the sprained ligament and joint capsule. In this case, we should avoid flexion and extension activities and weight-bearing activities of the ankle joint for 2 weeks.
