A spiral fracture is a fracture that occurs when the long bones of the body are subjected to torsional violence, and the fracture line is altered in a spiral pattern, hence the name spiral fracture. Spiral fracture is an unstable fracture, because the fracture line is changed in a spiral shape, so the broken ends can not be stable together, which usually leads to more obvious displacement of the fracture ends. In severe cases, the fracture may even puncture the skin, resulting in an open fracture. Therefore, spiral fractures eventually require surgery to cut, reset and securely fixate the fracture to ensure stability and healing.
