Elshotsholtzia has the function of sweating and relieving the body’s surface of evil qi, dispelling summer heat and dampness, and inducing diuresis and eliminating edema. Elshotria is pungent in taste, slightly warm in nature, and belongs to the lung, spleen, and stomach meridians. It is suitable for symptoms such as fever, malignant cold (fear of cold), headache, and lack of sweating caused by cold and wind-cold in summer; vomiting and diarrhea caused by over-eating of cold and dampness obstructing the spleen and stomach during summer season; as well as oedema, and dysuria (unruly urination). The adverse effects of this product are not clear. Because of the strong power of Elsholtzia pungent and warm sweating, it should be avoided in cases of superficial deficiency with sweating and summer fever.
