What is an inguinal hernia?

Inguinal hernia is a common condition commonly known as “small bowel gas”. It occurs in men, with a male to female incidence ratio of 15:1, and can occur at all ages. In layman’s terms, an inguinal hernia is a defect in the abdominal wall structure in the inguinal region, i.e., a hole, through which the organs of the abdominal cavity, such as the intestines, bulge out, a defect we call a hernia ring. In adults, there is absolutely no possibility for this defect to heal on its own, so once the hernia appears, it is unlikely to disappear on its own and will only get worse. A mild inguinal hernia can cause discomfort and affect the patient’s work life, while the progression of the condition can gradually cause serious and even life-threatening effects.
