How often is the urinary catheter changed

There is no clear rule on how often the catheter should be changed. For patients with long-term indwelling catheters, it is not advisable to change the catheter frequently, generally the latex catheter can be changed once every 7 days; the silicone catheter can be changed once every 4 weeks or even longer.

There are two kinds of catheters, one is long-term built-in, one is short-term built-in, short-term built-in in principle, need to be removed within 1 week; and for long-term built-in, if there is no sign of infection or ureteral blockage is not the need for frequent replacement, general latex urinary catheter can be replaced once every 7 days; silicone urinary catheter can be replaced once every 4 weeks or even longer.

The exact replacement time should also depend on the patient’s own condition. If the urethra is obstructed due to secretion or bleeding in the bladder, and the drainage is not smooth, the urethra should be replaced at any time. It is recommended that patients use catheterization appropriately under the guidance of a medical professional and change the urinary catheter as needed, and seek medical guidance if there is any abnormality.
