Antimicrobial therapy course for pneumococcal pneumonia

Pneumococcal pneumonia is a lung infection caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. The clinical manifestations can be fever, cough, and sputum. The main treatment options are first- or second-generation cephalosporins, or penicillin, or also quinolones. The treatment course is mainly based on the patient’s symptoms, signs and imaging. If the lung lesion is mild, the general course of antibacterial therapy is about 7-10 days. If the patient has severe pulmonary lesions, but the vital signs are stable, it may generally take up to 2-3 weeks. If the patient shows signs of severe pneumonia or even affects hemodynamic stability, the course of treatment may be very long, possibly 1 month to several months. This is because the patient may have a late co-infection with other pathogens.
