I often encounter many patients with chronic cough in my respiratory clinic, many of whom have developed cough variant asthma (a special type of asthma with cough as the main symptom), but due to the lack of guidance from specialists during the previous consultation and treatment, many of them were treated as cough caused by bronchitis or pharyngitis due to ineffective treatment and delayed because they did not undergo relevant examinations in time. Many of them have been treated as bronchitis or pharyngitis, and their cough has been delayed until the bronchial excitation test or diastolic test (a test to diagnose asthma) is performed, and then they have typical asthma. Therefore, for patients who have no previous history of asthma and have a cough that has been easily aggravated at night or accompanied by chest tightness or tightness, it is recommended that they should go to the respiratory department of a regular tertiary care hospital as soon as possible to check whether they have cough variant asthma. In addition, common diseases that cause chronic cough include reflux esophagitis (with a burning sensation behind the sternum and generalized acidity) and postnasal drip syndrome (postnasal secretions flowing into the pharynx). There is also a class of antihypertensive drugs that can also cause chronic cough (such as Kaipotong class), which should be distinguished. 2. To choose the right treatment plan If the diagnosis of cough variant asthma is mild to moderate and the duration of the disease is within 2 years, Chinese medicine treatment can be considered first. TCM treatment can significantly control symptoms, improve the patient’s institutional status, and achieve a therapeutic effect that takes into account both the symptoms and the root cause. If the TCM treatment is not well controlled, then consider combining it with western medicine. Western medicine has a general treatment plan for asthma, although it can control the symptoms faster, but due to the need for long-term use of hormonal drugs, easy to produce side effects, and the need for long-term or even lifelong drug maintenance, such as the discontinuation of the disease is prone to recurrence. 3, to adhere to sufficient treatment time In the case of cough variant asthma, whether it is Chinese medicine treatment or Western medicine treatment, it is important to adhere to sufficient treatment time, at least 3 months to 6 months, and then decide whether to reduce the dose or discontinue it according to the improvement of the condition. Patients should never stop their own medication, because asthma is originally a recurrent disease, when the symptoms are reduced do not think you can stop the medication without treatment, if repeated will affect the effectiveness of treatment. 4. If it is only a chronic cough after a cold, there is no need to worry about it, as it can be cured very quickly by using Chinese medicine treatment.
