What’s the deal with plasma exchange?

Plasma exchange is a therapeutic technique that removes harmful components from the body’s plasma and is commonly used in the treatment of various renal and autoimmune diseases.
Plasmapheresis is a therapeutic technique in which plasma is first separated from the patient’s circulatory system, and then the harmful components of the separated plasma are removed and infused back into the body.
Plasma exchange can remove the plasma together with autoantibodies, immune complexes, toxins and other large molecules dissolved in the plasma by centrifugation or filtration, in order to alleviate the damage of such substances to the body and avoid organ damage, and to achieve the purpose of temporary alleviation and treatment of the disease.
Plasma exchange is commonly used in the treatment of Guillain-Barré syndrome, myasthenia gravis, and anti-glomerular basement membrane disease.
