What is the bone marrow donation process?

The steps of bone marrow donation, also known as hematopoietic stem cell donation, are roughly: registration, matching, bone marrow mobilization, and donation.
The specific steps are:
1. Donors can register to join the Chinese Bone Marrow Bank after donating blood. When there is a patient in need of bone marrow transplantation, after the patient and the donor are successfully matched, the staff will contact the donor, and after the donor’s consent, the donor’s bone marrow will be withdrawn to carry out the bone marrow transplantation.
2. The donor’s bone marrow mobilization is called bone marrow mobilization: granulocyte colony-stimulating factor is injected subcutaneously into the donor’s body, and it usually takes 3~5 days to mobilize the hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow to the peripheral blood, which is called bone marrow mobilization.
3. After bone marrow mobilization, when the number of hematopoietic stem cells in the donor’s peripheral blood reaches a certain level, the donor’s hematopoietic stem cells can be separated out using a blood cell separator, and the physician will perform a bone marrow transplant on the patient. This is the entire complete process of bone marrow donation.
If the donor or the patient is not feeling well, it is recommended to consult a doctor in time, so that the cause of the disease can be clarified and targeted treatment can be carried out under the guidance of a professional doctor.
